În anul 490 î.Hr. a avut loc prima luptă din istorie pentru democrație, în satul grecesc Maraton. Deși erau depășiți numeric de armata Persiei, soldații Atenei au fost victorioși și au deschis drumul către democrație, păstrând totodată clasicul mod de viață grecesc pe a cărui fundație s-a construit civilizația vestică.

Legendele spun că, atunci când lupta a luat sfârșit, mesagerul atenian Fidipide a alergat douăzeci și patru de mile până la Atena pentru a duce vestea victoriei. Maratonul din zilele noastre comemorează această reușită.

Traseul Maratonului din Atena este recunoscut ca fiind cel original, al maratonului istoric, și a fost folosit și la Jocurile Olimpice din 2004. Alergătorii care se înscriu la Maratonul din Atena pășesc, așadar, chiar pe urmele lui Fidipide.

In 490 BC the first battle for democracy was fought at the Greek village of Marathon. Though overwhelmingly outnumbered by the invading Persian Army, the citizen-soldiers of Athens prevailed and, in so doing, allowed democracy to be established, while preserving the classical Greek way of life that became the foundation of western civilization.

Legend has it that, when the battle was won, the Athenian messenger Phidippides ran twenty-four miles to Athens, carrying news of the stunning victory. The modern marathon commemorates this feat.

The course of the Athens Marathon is recognised as the original historical course, and it was also used at the 2004 Olympics held in Athens. Runners who sign up for the Athens Marathon therefore walk along the steps of Phidippides.
